Welcome to the official Ares Galaxy Wiki. The aim of this project is to help people to find more specific information about the different features included in this software. Our blog provides you with helpful guides on how to solve problems you may be having but this wiki is there to provide you with additional information you may require about certain features and extras. It's a community project so you can also contribute to it yourself if you really want to, which you can do by creating an account on the system. All edits will be manually reviewed to avoid it being spammed.

What is Ares Galaxy?

Ares is a piece of software that has been built to allow you to download files free of charge through the built in P2P network. There is a variety of different files you can obtain using this method - to name a few types of media as examples, you can find the latest songs and albums (even old ones if you want to), movies that are still in the cinema or have been released on DVD, even games and software that people have to spend thousands of dollars on.

It is currently built for the Windows operating system and is non-functional on Linux and Mac OS X distributions, however rumors are around that this tool will work using applications such as Wine which attempt to emulate Windows software onto other systems. This is unconfirmed so testing it out for yourself is probably a good idea. All versions of the OS should work as expected - including (but not limited to) Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8.

The programming language used to develop Ares Galaxy is Delphi, which is why support for other operating systems has not been natively developed yet. A large number of libraries required by the application are not supported on these alternative computer specifications making it challenging to easily port it over. However, this brings a lot of advantages. It is very easy to work with and to develop - this software is completely open source making it easy for other developers to contribute without needing the knowledge of a more complex programming language such as C++.

The software is also currently distributed under the GNU General Public License. This license states that any distribution of the program must be licensed under exactly the same terms. This is done to protect the original authors and the source code of the project itself, it's usually referred to as "copyleft". It has been under this license since it started and has meant that even though many derivatives of Ares have been released, the original still stands and is used by millions of people worldwide.

There are a number of additional features which have also been added to make it more than just a file sharing application. To give a few examples, the software currently supports the SHOUTcast protocol to allow internet radio to be played directly from any streaming station. A media player is also included which can be used to play files in the library and preview those that are still in the transferring stage. An internet browser is also built in which allows users to browse the internet at the same time as downloading data from the network, making it one of the most useful tools in this industry.
